Job Announcement


Looking to advance your career in wildland firefighting? If so, Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) may be for you.  We are currently accepting applications for a Hand Crew Foreman, located in the Bridge Unit.

This is an 8-month, seasonal position. There is a possibility of Co-Op work to fill the other four months of employment, depending on experience and qualifications. Fire season typically runs mid-June to October. However, the season varies each year depending on weather. 

This position is eligible for health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan, sick leave, and annual leave. Sick leave and length of service will transfer from the Douglas and Walker Range Forest Protective Associations and the Oregon Department of Forestry.




  • Hold valid Oregon Driver’s License, Class “C” or higher.

  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and driving record check.

  • Pass a Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level.

  • Provide work boots, as required by District Policy, at time of employment.

  • Monitor field productivity, quality, and compliance with safety standards.

  • Experience operating vehicles with manual transmissions, 4-wheel drive, and/or air brakes on various road conditions during fire situations.


  • Experienced, 3-5 years, wildland firefighter.

  • Qualified Single Resource Boss.

  • Qualified Crew Boss, or ability to obtain within first fire season.

  • Qualified Level 2 Faller.

  • Knowledge of forest laws and rules, reforestation, young stand management, fire suppression, and supervisory techniques.

  • Perform as an initial attack resource on natural cover fires.

  • Manage a 6 to 10-person handcrew under various conditions.

  • Participate in training and leading of crew in wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, fire prevention, and safety activities.

  • Perform maintenance on fire equipment, buildings, and grounds.

  • Read and interpret maps to determine ownership, legal locations, latitude and longitude.

  • Complete reports, time sheets, and logs associated with daily activities.

  • Monitor field productivity, quality, and compliance with safety standards.

  • Work effectively as a team leader and as a member of a team.



  • Maintain professional working relationship with co-workers and cooperators.

  • Maintain professional appearance.

  • Long hours of arduous physical activity in difficult terrain and in all types of weather.

  • Exposure to areas of poison oak, bees, smoke, steep terrain, and other hazards.

  • Exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, and hazards of burning and/or falling material.

  • Varying work shifts during emergency conditions, weekends, holidays, and/or long hours on short notice.

  • Assignments to emergency incidents, which may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days.

  • Attention and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Occasional travel throughout the state of Oregon.

  • Maintain the ability to pass the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level annually.

  • Reporting daily to work prepared and fit for duty with all required personal protective equipment and lunch.

  • Driving wildland fire engines or crew transports while obeying all traffic laws or driving on steep, narrow forest roads.
