Recent hot weather has produced Red Flag Fire warnings for much of southern Oregon. With temperatures continuing to hover in the mid to high 90’s, wildland fire managers are asking everyone to exercise extreme caution when working or recreating outdoors.
“We’ve had a pretty successful fire season so far,” says Coos Forest Protective Association spokesman Tom Fields. “But the toughest part of fire season is now upon us and we all need to do whatever we can to prevent a fire from starting.”
Fields says that in addition to high temperatures, dry east wind events will contribute to elevate fire danger even more.
Fire season restrictions currently in place for the general public prohibits smoking, off-road driving, and open fires in wildland areas. Campfires are only allowed in designated areas such as state parks and approved campgrounds. Activities including smoking, off road driving, welding and the cutting of metal are also prohibited. Power saw use and the mowing of dried, cured grass are only allowed before 1:00 p.m. and after 8:00 p.m.
